Uppercase File Names

All my files are having names in lower case. I wanted to change these names to upper case. I am using red hat linux version 8. How can i change all. SID is the name of the Instance, whereas DBNAME is the name of the database. According to my tests, using a lowercase database name, but uppercase SID, still installs lowercase file directory names, as it should. UPPER.example.com, however creates an uppercase SID and uses uppercase file directories.

Alternatively referred to as caps and capital, and sometimes abbreviated as UC, uppercase is a typeface of larger characters. For example, a, b, and c is lowercase, and A, B, and C is uppercase.

Tip

It is bad etiquette to have everything you type in ALL UPPERCASE CHARACTERS. When reading anything typed in all caps, most readers assume you are YELLING or find the text hard to read.

Why is capitalization important?

Passwords

Passwords are case-sensitive to add an extra level of security. If your caps lock key was enabled while creating your password and disabled while trying to log in the next day, you would not be able to log into your account.

File names, directories, and paths

When dealing with file names, directories, and paths in many operating systems and paths, they are case-sensitive. For example, in Microsoft Windows nothing is case-sensitive. However, when uploading a file to the Internet, the files and directories become case-sensitive. For example, the file name of this web page is 'uppercase.htm' and must be typed in all lowercase in the URL while online. However, if you were viewing the file locally on a Windows computer, the capitalization would not matter.

Measurements

When dealing with computer measurements and other measurements, capitalization is important for identifying the exact type of measurement. For example, 'Mb' (short for megabit) and 'MB' (short for megabyte) are two different types of measurements with different values.

Commands

Command line commands in operating systems like Linux are case-sensitive, which means if you typed 'Ls' to list file you would get an error since the ls command is all lowercase.

Programming functions

In earlier programming languages like Fortran, the keywords and the names of data objects were required to be written in all uppercase because punch card machines did not have a Shift key.

Acronyms

To help differentiate an acronym from other words in a sentence, they are typed in uppercase. For example, the acronym RAM is typed in all uppercase to help identify the word as an acronym.

Using the uc function

Many programming and scripting languages use the uc function to convert a variable into uppercase. For example, in the example below is how the uc and ucfirst functions can be used in Perl.

In the above example, the $example variable is set to all lowercase. The third line uppercases the first character making the text 'Hello world,' and the fifth line uppercases the whole string making the text 'HELLO WORLD.'

What is the difference between capitalize and uppercase?

Capitalize is used when you're describing the first letter of a word or a single letter. For example, the first letter in this sentence is capitalized. Uppercase is used to describe a word with every letter being capitalized. For example, the acronym CPU is in uppercase.

Should I use 'uppercase' or 'upper case' in my writing?

Both 'uppercase' and 'upper case' are correct. However, you should only use one form in your writing. According to The Associated Press Stylebook and the Microsoft Manual of Style, you should write 'uppercase' as one word when being used as an adjective and as a noun.

A file name is the complete title of a file and file extension. For example, 'readme.txt' is a complete file name. A file name may also describe only the first portion of the file. For example, 'readme' is the name of the file and '.txt' is its file name extension.

In the example above, the first file shown in Explorer is 'Regedit.exe.' 'Regedit' is the name of the file, and '.exe' is the file extension, identifying it as an executable file. The next file, 'RtlExUpd.dll,' which is a DLL file, is another example.

Invalid file name characters

File names with spaces

Although all operating systems today support spaces in file names, a command line you may encounter errors because the command line doesn't know where the file name starts and ends. To prevent errors with file names with spaces, surround the file name with quotes when being used in a command line.

File names with capital letters

File names can contain uppercase and lowercase characters. However, the operating system that uses the files may be case sensitive. For example, Microsoft Windows is not case sensitive and treats all files the same regardless if they have all lowercase characters or some uppercase characters. However, Linux and macOS are case sensitive, which means the file 'readme.txt' and 'README.TXT' are treated as two different files even though they have the same file name.

Tip

When designing a web page or uploading any images or other files to the Internet, they are case sensitive. We always recommend keeping all your file names in all lowercase characters when they are used online to help prevent any confusion or errors.

What is the file name character length limit?

Every operating system has a limit to how many character can be used in a file name that is around 255 characters long. When determining the length of a file, both the file name and the file extension are used together to get the total length. For example, the file 'myfile.txt' is ten characters long. Below is a list of Microsoft Windows versions and their file name character limits.

Windows 10 - 260 character limit.
Windows 8 - 260 character limit.

Windows Vista - 260 character limit.
Windows XP - 255 character limit.
Windows 2000 - 254 character limit.

When renaming a file the full path and file name are used which means the directory names, separating slashes, and the file name should not exceed the above set limits (e.g., 260 characters).

Should I be using 'file name' or 'filename' in my writing?

Today, both 'file name' and 'filename' are widely used and accepted. The original form of the word was 'file name' and 'filename' became popular as more people and software programs began to use that version of the word. According to the Microsoft Manual of Style, a file name is 'Two words both as an adjective and as a noun when referring to the name of a file. Do not hyphenate.'

Note

When referring to a programming term such as the FileName property or fileName variable, you should be using the same capitalization of the word in the program you're describing.
